Towards sustainability: electricity

On Sunday, February 8 , 2009 | Tags: , , ,

towards-sustainabilityFor the second part of this series - the first one was on heating – we are having a look at electricity consumption of households and the various ways we can decrease it.

This will enable you to have lower energy bills – always a good thing with the hard times we have – to cut your carbon dioxide emissions and thus enable you to live a more sustainable lifestyle.

From your lightning to the various appliances around you, the opportunities for savings are numerous and this post propose you a selection of three.

First thing first : switch now to energy efficient light bulbs. Between CFLs and the new LED bulbs, you have no more excuses not to do it.

Similarly, if you replace your old fridge or any appliance, choose the most energy efficient ones (A or A+ if you live in European Union, Energy Star for the United States)

Second step : tackle vampire power (or phantom energy). Indeed, each little red light on your TV, DVD player and so on shows that it is still consuming energy.

Third step: load up your dishwasher and when washing clothes use colder water. (Thanks to Daryl at Verda Vivo for that tip)

Hope these tips will help you in decreasing your electricity consumption. I look forward to reading yours, so don’t hesitate to leave a comment !

Some random wisdom

We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.

When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.
