Natural swimming pools

You perhaps don’t know it but swimming is by far my favorite sport. This is to the point that I seriously consider having one day my own pool to daily swim a kilometer of breaststroke.

One of the problems faced by swimming pools - besides using a lot of water, an increasingly scarce resource - is the extensive use of potentially harmful chemicals like chlorine.

Last summer I wrote about how the WWF wanted partakers to the Beijing Olympics to offset their emissions as they traveled. I didn’t think about offsets anymore until today.

But several things including a lengthy reflection, a post in the Business of Green blog and a comic strip from Climate Change Action drove me to write again on this topic.

My opinion hasn’t changed. People should decrease by themselves their greenhouse gases emissions. But offsets could be part of the solution for companies. Continue reading »

For the past few months, I have been reading about this video without never watching it. After a comment on La Marguerite Blog, I decided to do so.

In 20 minutes or so, I learned a lot about the true cost and life cycle of the stuff we buy year after year and how this excessive phenomenon endangers our planet and very survival.

I don’t agree with everything stated by Annie Leonard, but I believe nonetheless that it should be watched by all to better grasp the consequences of consumerism. Continue reading »

Time to slow down…

I remember that Meryn once stated that slow was a keyword of our future. It seems he was right as Treehugger published a most interesting article on that phenomenon.

With slow food, homes, cities, travels, flying (!), design, fashion and cars, my guess is that taking one’s time will indeed be a cool green thing in the quite near future.

The great thing with going slowly is that you consume less energy, and thus emit less greenhouse gases. A very nice idea. Continue reading »
