While browsing my tweets to prepare my selection of Twitter for June I found several articles pointing out to a quick climate fix : tackling black carbon (also known as soot) might prove to bring exceptional greenhouse gases emissions cuts.

The work was carried out jointly by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) and published in margin of the Bonn Climate Talks in June.

On top of slowing climate change, this would prove to have important health and agriculture benefits. Indeed up to 2.5 million lives could be saved each year. This is exactly a win-win-win situation. Continue »

According to the Huffington Post : The warmest year on record is a three-way tie: 2010, 2005 and 1998. So says the U.N. weather agency, providing further evidence Thursday that the planet is slowly but surely heating up. ”

” Average temperatures globally last year were 0.95 degrees Fahrenheit (0.53 Celsius) higher than the 1961-90 mean that is used for comparison purposes, according to World Meteorological Organization. ”

“The 2010 data confirm the Earth’s significant long-term warming trend,” said Michel Jarraud, WMO’s top official. He added that the ten warmest years after records began in 1854 have all occurred since 1998.

To the World Meteorological Organization the main greenhouse gases – carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide – keep increasing in the atmosphere, and this despite the efforts and the economic recession. To the WMO :

” The report highlights concerns that global warming may lead to even greater emissions of methane from Arctic areas. To the Bulletin, total radiative forcing of all long-lived greenhouse gases increased by 27.5% from 1990 to 2009.”

Meanwhile, NASA reports 2010 is the hottest year on record so far. It seems that more than ever before, drastic action is needed. Will the call be heard in Cancun ? Continue »

Burning EearthAs the year 2009 is ending the World Meterological Organization reveiled in a report that this decade was the warmest ever recorded. This happens as each passing decade is warmer than the previous one.

What disqualifies any natural phenomenon as an explanation is the speed of the warming and the exceptional increase of greenhouse gases emissions for the past decade.

Climate change is already taking place and causing unrest and troubles all over the world. It is high time our representatives acknowledge the fact and act. Continue »

God forbid that India should ever take to industrialism after the manner of the west… keeping the world in chains. If [our nation] took to similar economic exploitation, it would strip the world bare like locusts. — Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
