I was really thinking about if I should share the latest World Bank prospects with you. To this most venerable agency, economic growth is due to be nearly flat lining globally this year.

With less money for the traditional economy, isn’t it time to embrace sustainable alternatives ? Energy efficiency and renewables are growing faster and faster. They are also creating more and more jobs around the world.

If we want to prevent massive climate change, world wars and other equally horrifying prospects, our only way out is sustainability. It’s high time our politicians hear this !

To the New York Times : “Annual monetary losses for natural disasters are expected to rise to $185 billion worldwide by the end of the century, even without factoring in the anticipated negative impacts of climate change.”

” With climate change included, the global annual losses could increase by anywhere from $28 billion to $68 billion. But governments can drastically reduce these losses and rising mortality rates (…)”

Solar energy in desertsThe World Bank via its Clean Technology Fund is investing $750 million (522 million euros) in eleven concentrating solar plants in the Middle East and North Africa region. This is due to spur additional investments worth $4.85 billion.

These projects are due to add nearly a gigawatt of capacity to local grids within three to five years in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia and would triple the current concentrated solar power (CSP) capacity.

I wonder if this could be a significant boost to the DESERTEC project as it is exactly about building renewable energy facilities in these countries. Continue »

In two days I found in my RSS feeds two articles on Russia. The first one is about a study from the World Bank stating that this large country is seriously at risk because of climate change.

Indeed global warming will increase the importance of already large climate phenomena such as storms or heat waves. This is bad news for the country as it is already plagued by derelict infrastructure from the soviet era.

The second news concerned the response to this impeding crisis. Like in Australia, the Russian government fails to act enough on climate change. Continue »
